Choosing the right glove weight is the single most important decision when you buy boxing gloves. Too light and you risk hurting your hands or your sparring partner; too heavy and your shoulders burn out before the end of the round. This guide explains how boxing glove sizes work and gives you a simple chart to follow.
How are boxing gloves sized?
Boxing gloves are measured in ounces (oz), which describes the weight of the glove and, indirectly, how much padding it has. The most common sizes are 8oz, 10oz, 12oz, 14oz and 16oz. Heavier gloves carry more foam, which spreads the force of each punch and protects both your knuckles and your partner.
Boxing glove weight chart
| Bodyweight | Bag & pad work | Sparring |
|---|---|---|
| Under 45 kg / 100 lb | 8–10 oz | 12 oz |
| 45–60 kg / 100–130 lb | 10–12 oz | 14 oz |
| 60–75 kg / 130–165 lb | 12–14 oz | 16 oz |
| 75–90 kg / 165–200 lb | 14–16 oz | 16 oz |
| Over 90 kg / 200 lb | 16 oz | 16–18 oz |
What weight should I use for sparring?
Most gyms ask adults to spar in 16oz gloves. The extra padding makes sparring safer and lets you work at a higher pace. Lighter fighters (under 60 kg) often spar in 14oz. If you only buy one pair, 14oz or 16oz is the most versatile choice.
What weight is best for heavy bag work?
For bag and pad work, 12–14oz is the sweet spot for most adults. It is light enough to stay fast and heavy enough to protect your wrists on hard shots. Always wear hand wraps underneath.
Does the closure change the size?
No – the weight stays the same, but lace-up and Velcro gloves fit differently. Lace-ups lock the wrist tighter; Velcro is easier to put on by yourself.

FAQ
Are 16oz gloves too heavy for beginners?
No. 16oz gloves are the standard for sparring and are a great all-round choice for adult beginners.
Can women use the same glove chart?
Yes. Glove weight is chosen by bodyweight and training type, not gender.
Should kids use 8oz gloves?
Children usually train in 6–10oz gloves depending on age and weight. Always follow your coach’s advice.
